Qatar Airways has further cemented its reputation as a global aviation leader by sweeping the top honors at the 2025 Skytrax World Airline Awards, held at the Paris Air Show’s Air and Space Museum.

The airline was named the World’s Best Airline for a record ninth time, an unprecedented achievement in the 26-year history of the awards, often dubbed the “Oscars of the aviation industry”. This recognition highlights Qatar Airways’ sustained excellence in service, innovation, and passenger satisfaction.

In addition to the coveted overall title, Qatar Airways dominated the Business Class categories. The airline was awarded World’s Best Business Class, with its signature Qsuite once again earning praise for its industry-leading privacy, comfort, and innovative design.

The Qsuite’s unique features, such as sliding doors and the option to create double beds or private suites for families and colleagues, have set new benchmarks for business travel luxury.

The Al Mourjan Garden Lounge at Hamad International Airport in Doha was named the World’s Best Business Class Airline Lounge, recognized for its sophisticated design, extensive amenities, and tranquil atmosphere that offers travelers a premium pre-flight experience.

The lounge is part of the airport’s broader commitment to excellence, with Hamad International itself having recently been awarded for the world’s best airport shopping experience.

German aviation vlogger Josh Cahill, known for his candid airline reviews and a YouTube following of over 788,000, has made headlines after being seen onboard a Qatar Airways aircraft at the 2025 Paris Air Show—his first time on the airline’s plane since a high-profile ban in December 2023.

The controversy began when Cahill published a critical review titled “The Shocking Decline of Qatar Airways,” documenting his negative experiences on a flight from Colombo to London via Doha. The review highlighted issues such as dirty bathrooms, unhelpful crew, and outdated cabins, quickly drawing widespread attention and sparking debate among aviation enthusiasts.

Qatar Airways, displeased with the negative publicity, reportedly offered Cahill a complimentary flight in exchange for removing the video a request he refused. The airline then asked for the removal of negative comments about employee working conditions, which Cahill also declined.

After these refusals, Qatar Airways attempted to have the video taken down from YouTube, citing privacy concerns for crew members. YouTube sided with Cahill, leaving the video online. The airline then invoked its contract of carriage, which prohibits unauthorized onboard filming, and informed Cahill by email that his upcoming booking was canceled and that he would not be allowed to make future reservations.

The fallout extended beyond Cahill. According to sources cited by Cahill, the entire crew from his reviewed flight was reportedly terminated after the airline failed to remove the video, though this has not been independently substantiated. Cahill has since appealed to Qatar Airways’ new CEO, Badr Al Meer, to reconsider the crew’s dismissal.

At the 2025 Paris Air Show, Qatar Airways featured a static display of its Boeing 777-300ER. As is customary at such events, attendees including Cahill were allowed onboard to view the product. Qatar Airways staff, apparently unaware of his ban, welcomed him aboard, and Cahill posted a photo from the QSuite Business Class on social media, captioning it: “Perhaps Qatar Airways will unban me now”. The airline has consistently declined to comment on the incident or clarify the current status of the ban.

Cahill’s experience has intensified debate over airline transparency and the rights of online reviewers. He has expressed concern that banning passengers for negative reviews sets a troubling precedent for censorship in the industry. The rankings saw Qatar Airways retain the top spot for a record ninth time, followed by Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific. Japan’s All Nippon Airways rounded out the top five, with Emirates reaffirming its place among the global elite.

The Skytrax awards, based on feedback from over 22 million passengers worldwide, highlight excellence across cabin service, onboard experience, staff hospitality, and innovation. Emirates’ high placement reflects strong loyalty and satisfaction from UAE travelers, especially on long-haul and premium routes.

In addition to its Skytrax success, Emirates was also named ‘Best Airline Worldwide’ for the twelfth consecutive year at the 2025 Business Traveller Middle East (BTME) Awards. The airline swept three additional categories: Best First Class, Best Premium Economy Class, and Best Airport Lounge in the Middle East. These accolades underscore Emirates’ ongoing investments in fleet upgrades, onboard product innovation, and premium ground services.

Emirates’ brand value soared to $8.4 billion in 2024, making it one of the top five most valuable airline brands globally and the most valuable outside the US. The long-anticipated single tourist visa for Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries has been officially approved and is set to be rolled out in the near future, UAE Minister of Economy Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri confirmed on Monday.

Speaking to Khaleej Times on the sidelines of the UAE Hospitality Summer Camp press conference, Al Marri announced that the unified visa plan has cleared major hurdles and is now under review by the UAE Ministry of Interior and other key stakeholders for final implementation.

“The single (GCC) tourist visa has been approved and is now waiting to be implemented, hopefully soon,” Al Marri stated.

Modeled after the Schengen visa used in Europe, the GCC Grand Tours Visa will allow foreign visitors to travel across all six GCC member states — the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, and Kuwait — with a single entry permit. The move is widely seen as a strategic step to enhance regional integration and streamline cross-border tourism.

Tourism and hospitality executives have hailed the unified visa as a potential game-changer for the Gulf’s tourism industry, with expectations that it will significantly stimulate both leisure and business travel — especially the growing trend of "bleisure" tourism, where professionals blend work and vacation into extended trips across neighboring countries.

Industry analysts forecast that the initiative will contribute to economic diversification and job creation, giving a substantial lift to the region’s GDP. These expectations are supported by robust data from the GCC Statistical Centre, which recorded 68.1 million tourist arrivals across the Gulf in 2023 — a 42.8% increase from pre-pandemic levels — and $110.4 billion in tourism revenue.

The UAE, a major player in regional tourism, continues to see steady growth in its travel sector. The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) reported that the industry supported 833,000 jobs in the country in 2023. That number is expected to rise to one million by 2030, outpacing earlier WTTC forecasts of 928,000 jobs by 2034.

Dubai, in particular, continues to cement its status as a global tourism magnet. The emirate attracted 7.15 million international visitors in the first four months of 2025, marking a 7% year-on-year increase, according to figures from the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism.

As implementation of the unified GCC visa nears, stakeholders across the Gulf are optimistic that the new policy will usher in a transformative era for tourism, making the region more accessible, connected, and economically dynamic than ever before.
