Ahmedabad, June 16, 2025 Officials probing the tragic Air India plane crash have confirmed the recovery of the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) black box, a critical breakthrough that is expected to shed light on the cause of the disaster that claimed 270 lives, including 241 onboard the aircraft.
Earlier, only the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) had been found, but the recent discovery of the CVR completes the set of black boxes essential for a thorough investigation. This development was reported to P.K. Mishra, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who visited the crash site in Ahmedabad and the civil hospital treating the injured on Sunday.
During his visit, Mishra chaired a high-level review meeting at the Circuit House, where he discussed ongoing relief, rescue, and investigative efforts with senior officials from the Central and State Governments, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), and the Airports Authority of India.
The AAIB is leading the detailed inquiry, with parallel support from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) under international protocols, as the Boeing 787-8 aircraft involved is American-made.
The crash occurred shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad on June 12. The London-bound flight AI171 crashed into a medical college campus in the Meghani Nagar area, resulting in massive casualties both onboard and on the ground. Only one passenger survived the crash.
Mishra also visited the civil hospital to meet with victims and bereaved families, overseeing DNA sample matching efforts at the Forensic Science Laboratory in Gandhinagar to expedite identification with scientific accuracy. He reiterated the Prime Minister’s commitment to providing full support to the victims’ families and ensuring a coordinated response across all agencies involved.
This critical recovery of the CVR black box marks a significant step forward in understanding the sequence of events leading to one of India’s deadliest aviation tragedies in recent years
