Qatar Airways has made aviation history by introducing “Gaming in the Sky,” the world’s first-ever in-flight gaming competition, thanks to its partnership with Starlink, SpaceX’s high-speed satellite internet service. The inaugural event took place on May 11, 2025, during a flight from Doha to London aboard a Boeing 777, transforming the aircraft into a unique esports arena at cruising altitude.
The competition brought together two teams, Team Burgundy Oryx and Team Grey Aviators, each featuring a lineup of international gaming and entertainment personalities. Among the participants were well-known streamers and content creators such as Tfue, Castro1021, Lisa Zimouche, Alodia Gosiengfiao, Dantic, SV2, AJ3, Aameghessib, Danny Aarons, Ffearfful, MattHDGamer, and Slater.
Hosted by Oussifooty, the teams competed in popular games like EA Sports FC 25 and Fortnite, with the action streamed live and shared through Qatar Airways’ social media channels, allowing fans around the world to follow the excitement in real time.
Starlink’s advanced satellite technology played a crucial role, providing the ultra-fast and stable internet connection necessary for seamless online gaming at 35,000 feet. This allowed participants to enjoy uninterrupted gameplay with minimal latency, a feat previously unattainable in commercial aviation.
The event also featured interactive elements for fans, including an Instagram contest offering the chance to win a business class ticket, further expanding engagement beyond the flight itself.
This initiative is part of Qatar Airways’ broader strategy to enhance the in-flight experience and set new standards for passenger entertainment. The airline is rapidly equipping its Boeing 777 fleet with Starlink connectivity and will soon introduce the world’s first Airbus A350 aircraft fitted with the same technology.
As the largest operator of Starlink-enabled widebody planes and the only airline in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to offer this service, Qatar Airways is leading the way in bringing high-speed, complimentary internet access for streaming, gaming, and working to its passengers.
Qatar Airways Group CEO, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, highlighted that “Gaming in the Sky” represents a significant leap forward in passenger engagement and comfort, showcasing the airline’s commitment to innovation. The success of the event demonstrates the transformative potential of reliable, high-speed connectivity in the air and signals a new era where travel and interactive entertainment go hand in hand, raising the bar for the global aviation industry.
